The Dutch-American team Koala has been declared winner of the 3rd Autonomous Greenhouse Challenge at Wageningen University & Research (WUR) in Bleiswijk, Netherlands. Team Koala is a joint effort combining the skills of the start-up company Koidra and researchers from Cornell University’s CEA/GLASE program, led by Neil Mattson.
In this third edition of the competition, five international teams from around the world have produced a greenhouse lettuce crop, managing it remotely using a fully autonomous algorithm. (See video below for detailed protocols.) The teams strove for the lowest feasible input of resources such as energy and CO2 and the production of a maximum of good quality heads of lettuce, optimizing net profit.
